Saint and Martyr.
Little is known of Margaret, although someone of that name seems to have suffered in the Diocletian persecutions. Many legends surround her, including that she jumped off a building to preserve her virginity (the same tale is told of St pelagia). Hers was one of the voices heard by joan of arc; she is frequently portrayed leading a dragon and she has recently been included among the fourteen Auxiliary Saints – as a patron of childbirth.
